Who is qualified?

You are eligible to enroll in Medicare if you are turning 65, and if you are under 65 but have a disability or End Stage Renal Disease. If you already get retirement benefits from Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board, you will be automatically enrolled and receive your Medicare card in the mail. If you do not want to auto enroll, you can still side step that process and choose your own plan. If you are 65, but did not pay Medicare taxes while you worked, you may still be able to secure Part A.

How do I get started?

If you are turning 65, you will have the opportunity to enroll from 3 months before your birthday until 3 months after. There are four basic parts for Medicare that cover hospitalizations, physician services, prescription drugs, skilled nursing facility care, home health visits, and hospice care, among other services. What if I’m still working?

If so, you will have to decide if you want to keep the insurance that your company offers. Medicare is designed to be an affordable option with lots of customization. Most people sign up for Original Medicare since it covers the necessitates, including Part A—hospital insurance and Part B—medical insurance. After signing up for Original Medicare, you can then add on a variety of options, such as prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, and hearing. You can even get additional benefits with a private insurer to cover other services that Original Medicare does not cover. If you are happy with your plan that you receive from your company, then you can always sign up after retirement during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
